Museums Alaska 2024 Conference Was a Blast!
Attending a conference in a field where you have limited experience can be daunting, but I’m thrilled to say the Museums Alaska 2024 Conference was an incredible experience! As a recent graduate with a degree in History, I unexpectedly found myself working at a museum, and when I learned I’d be attending this conference, I became a bit nervous. Little did I know this event would exceed my expectations and provide a wealth of opportunities.
Networking with Industry Professionals
One of the most valuable aspects of the conference was the chance to connect with museum professionals from across the state. It was awesome to meet individuals who have dedicated their careers to this field, several have been working in museums longer than I’ve been alive! What was particularly intriguing was encountering a fellow attendee with a remarkably similar journey to mine. It turned out he and his family moved to Alaska on the same day I did this year, which is pretty crazy.
Learning New Things
Beyond networking, the conference was packed with engaging activities. I had the opportunity to go on a collections tour of the UA Museum of the North, followed by a visit to their galleries. It was interesting seeing a museum that large after working in a small museum. I learned a bit about how the museum operates and about its archaeology department. This exposure has enriched my understanding of the field and provided me with fresh ideas to bring back to my own workplace. There were other learning opportunities as well, from learning how to work with Native Alaskan communities to gaining knowledge about paper conservation.
The Power of Community
What truly made the conference exceptional was the sense of community and warmth that permeated the event. From the board of Museums Alaska to fellow new Alaskans, everyone radiated excitement about being in the same room with like-minded individuals. It was awesome to see how welcoming and supportive the museum community can be, especially for newcomers like me. It was great to be able to learn, even in ways that I didn’t expect. The enthusiasm was contagious, and it made the experience all the more enjoyable.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the Museums Alaska 2024 Conference was a fantastic experience that destroyed my initial fears and ignited my passion for the museum field. The networking opportunities, educational experiences, and the sense of belonging I felt were invaluable. I left the conference not only with new knowledge and contacts but also with a renewed sense of purpose in my role within the museum world. I can’t wait to apply what I’ve learned and continue my journey in this vibrant community!
