Chugach Museum Intern

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Museum Director, the Museum Assistant (Intern) supports the daily operations of the Chugach Museum. This role contributes to a range of activities, including museum operations, exhibit development, and community cultural engagement. The intern collaborates closely with museum staff to gain hands-on experience in museum best practices for non-profit management, develop an understanding of the role museums play as economic and cultural assets within communities, and learn foundational principles of cultural stewardship.

Chugach Tribal Services (CTS) administers this internship program on behalf of Chugach Alaska Corporation (CAC). The program is specifically designed for Shareholders and Descendants of the Chugach Alaska Corporation (CAC), with the goal of building long-term career pathways in cultural stewardship and heritage preservation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Supports the daily operations of the Chugach Museum.
Assists with conducting research, developing exhibits, education programs, or other museum projects as needed.
Supports community engagement efforts, including events and outreach activities.
Assists in developing Museum newsletters, handouts, and other resources.
Supports community and regional shareholder events.
Attends all program participant meetings.
Performs other related work as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Mandatory:

Chugach Alaska Corporation (CAC) Shareholder or descendant of a CAC shareholder.
Currently enrolled in an accredited college as a full-time student with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 or above (in each class).
Pursuing a degree in Museum Studies, Education, History, Anthropology, Arts and Culture, or related fields.
Demonstrated intermediate skills in the use of Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Valid state Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
Ability to pass a pre-employment background check.

Knowledge Of: administrative procedures, policies and practices, operation of common office machinery including copiers, fax machines, and computers.

Collections Manager

Summary

The Collections Manager plays a critical role in the mission of the Kodiak History Museum, ensuring the documentation, preservation, and ongoing access to the Museum’s collections while striving towards best practices.
This role works directly with the public, respectfully gathering and preserving information with diverse audiences. This role ensures the safety and documentation of collections during research requests and a wide variety of public inquiries. The Collections Manager works collaboratively with the curatorial team with exhibit installation, loaning and shipping, and collections research and documentation for exhibits and programs. This is a full-time, salaried position that reports to the Chief Curator and supervises select volunteers.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Ensures the safety and security of collections
• Manages all collection documentation, digital database, research files, and reference library
• Manages deaccessions and acquisitions processes
• Manages preventative conservation programs including integrated pest management and housekeeping
• Facilitates all research and access to the collections
• Conducts regular inventory of collections
• Conducts regular collections policy review with Curatorial team
• Writes procedure documents for collections work
• Responsible for packing and shipping of objects
• Monitors emerging trends in best practices for the preservation, care, and access to museum collections

Necessary Knowledge and Skills
• Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, history, museum studies, information science, or related field
• 2+ Years of experience working in a museum, library, cultural organization, gallery, in an administrative or collections management capacity
• Experience organizing and managing files or collection management databases
• Experience handling delicate materials and creating storage solutions
• Demonstrated strong project management skills, successfully delivering projects on time and within scope
• Excellent organizational skills
• Ability to professionally communicate and coordinate with researchers and public inquires
• Good written and oral communications skills
• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and using PC computers
• Strong knowledge of museum best practices
• Independent worker with strong collaboration skills
• Must be able to safely lift up to 50 pounds and ascend/descend stairs
• Willingness to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends

Compensation and Benefits

$55,000 – $58,000 annually, depending on experience, with comprehensive benefits and annual cost of living increases. KHM will provide in its offer of employment a stipend of $3,000 for relocation to Kodiak from off-island, to be paid in the Collection Manager’s first paycheck. Following successful completion of a 3-month probationary period, position is eligible for medical, dental, PTO, and retirement benefits.

Collections & Curatorial Manager

The Collections and Curatorial Manager’s primary role is to steward the acquisition, documentation, conservation and use of the art and ethnographic objects collection, facilitating access for educational, research and art uses, and supporting exhibits.

Curatorial Internship

The Alaska State Museum invites interested candidates to apply for a curatorial internship with emphasis on gubernatorial collections. The intern will create a robust user-friendly webpage to highlight the gubernatorial collections of the State Museum, State Library, and State Archives in advance of a future exhibit using objects and items from these collections. This internship is an occupational experience designed to complement formal academic training and comes with a minimum of $5,000 stipend; it likely will be increased depending on the skills and experience of the applicant chosen, and travel/housing considerations. The internship will last 10 weeks. The intern is expected to work approximately 30 hours per week, and is required to be in person on-site at the Andrew P. Kashevaroff Building in downtown Juneau, Alaska.

Collections Manager

Mat-Su Trails and Parks Foundation, in cooperation with Alaska State Parks, is seeking a Collections Manager to complete a project-based inventory of historic collections at Independence Mine State Historic Park. This is a grant-funded, project-based, independent contractor position. The total compensation under this contract shall not exceed $19,040. This amount represents the maximum payable for all service rendered under the contract which is to be completed during the contract period (mid-June 2026 through October 2026). Work hours may vary based on project needs, site access, and weather conditions. The Collections Manager will work under the general direction of the Alaska State Park Technician I and is responsible for inventorying artifacts, artworks, and historic objects, including documentation of condition, location, and photographic records.

Pay: $28/hour

Location: Independence Mine State Historic Park (Hatcher Pass, Alaska)

Duties:

• Locate, identify, and inventory historic objects

• Create and maintain digital collection records and photographic documentation

• Ensure data integrity and adherence to documentation and cataloging standards

• Serve as an advocate for the collection when interacting with volunteers, visitors, concessionaire staff, donors, children, and other partners

• Work collaboratively with site staff, including the Alaska State Park Technician I

Qualifications:

• Current enrollment in or completion of a Museum Studies or related program, or an equivalent combination of education, training, or museum collections experience; degree preferred

• Experience with collections documentation or registration

• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a project-based role

Work Conditions: This position is located at a remote site with limited amenities and variable weather conditions. Work may involve standing, walking, lifting up to 60 pounds, and working outdoors. Relocation expenses, travel expenses, and per diem are not provided.

Position Overview
The Collections Manager is responsible for the care, management, documentation, and preservation of the Museum’s collections. This role oversees collections policies, storage, access, loans, and exhibition support, ensuring that objects are preserved according to professional standards and made accessible for public and research use.
This position works collaboratively across departments and may supervise staff, contractors, interns, and volunteers involved in collections care.
Key Responsibilities
Collections Management & Care
• Oversee cataloging, documentation, storage, and conservation of collections
