The Museum Leadership Cohort

Join our newest cohort—open to new directors and museum and cultural center leadership in Alaska who would like to network and delve deeper into topics related to their leadership positions.

Beginning this fall and continuing into early spring, cohort members will meet once or twice a month for eight facilitated discussions, with related short videos and resources provided prior for self-study.

Cohort members will come away with connections to a broad network of Alaskan colleagues as well as new or deeper knowledge on a variety of topics.

Cohort Timing

The Museum Leadership Cohort will run from Fall 2025 to Spring 2026, for five to six months. It will consist of eight live, 1.5 hour discussions, short videos and resources provided in between discussions, and three one-hour mentorship calls with colleagues.

Most months will consist of one live discussion, and 2-3 hours of additional content – short videos, resources, and/or a mentorship call.

Some months will consist of two live discussions.

Cost

The cohort registration fee is $500. We hope to work with all cohort members to make the program affordable for all. Scholarships are available thanks to the support of Ideum, Inc. and Rasmuson Foundation.

The cost of the cohort goes towards covering the honorariums for speakers, mentors, and facilitators.

What will be covered?

We respect that members of our cohort will be joining with their own expertise and needs, and will tailor the content to meet participants’ goals as much as possible.

Discussion and resources will likely cover topics like: budgeting, fundraising, collections management. exhibits and outreach, and working with staff and board.

Format

Facilitated Discussions

The cohort will include eight, 1.5 hour discussions on topics led by participants’ needs—during which participants may ask questions and brainstorm together. Discussions will be facilitated by non-cohort colleagues to further networking opportunities.

Recorded Resources

Each discussion theme will be prefaced with short videos with colleagues providing guidance and expertise around the topics. Templates and other resources will also be provided.

Mentorship/Networking Connections

During the cohort, participants will be connected to three directors and museum leaders for one-hour phone calls to expand their leadership networks. Matches will be made based on participants’ goals.

Who should apply:

  • Directors who are new to the position (last 5+ years) or new to Alaska
  • Museum leadership (i.e. Board Presidents) who wish to learn more about the field
  • Those in positions of leadership that aren’t executive directors, but are managing staff and budgets
