A couple of weeks ago, the Alaska Jewish Museum experienced another attack of anti-Semitic vandalism. This was the second attack of its kind this year. A few months earlier, Alaska Jewish Museum Director Leslie Fried arrived at work to find swastika stickers on the museum doors. In this most recent attack, not only were swastika stickers stuck to the doors, but the swastika was carved into the door so the symbol would remain after the stickers were removed.
No one should arrive to work at their museum and encounter such a distressing and hateful act. All museums should be a safe space for those who work at and visit our organizations.
Museums Alaska is asking the Alaska museum community to come together in an act of solidarity. If you would like to help develop a community response, such as a joint statement, a social media campaign, or a physical act of solidarity, please sign up to attend our meeting on October 8, 2021 at 12pm.
If you are unable to attend, but have thoughts or ideas on how you would like to contribute, please email Dixie Clough at director@museumsalaska.org.
